Muammar al-Gaddafi
Childhood and education: Gaddafi was born June 7 1942 in a rural farm area in western Libya. At the time of Gaddafi's birth Libya was an Italian colony. Gaddafi attended a Muslim elementary school and he was influenced by major events in the Arab world. Gaddafi enrolled in the Royal Libyan Military Academy in Benghazi in 1961. Later, he graduated in 1966. Gaddafi entered the army and quickly rose through the ranks. He started to hate the ruler of Libya at the time King Idris. It was said that he continued his education in Europe, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.
Rise to Power: On September 1 1969, a group of young military officers lead by Gaddafi staged a bloodless coup against King Idris while the king was in Turkey for medical purposes. Idris's nephew prince Sayyid Hasan ar-Rida al-mahdi as-Sanussi was immediatly placed under house arrest. They later proclaimed Libya as the Libyan Arab Republic. At age 27 young Gaddafi was officialy president of Libya.
As President of Libya: Muammar Al-Gaddafi did good things and many bad things as the leader of Libya. I would first like to state the bad things Gaddafi has done. He expelled ethnic Italians in 1970. He made it a crime to form different political parties (ex. Republican and Democrat). He forced rebels to give up or be killed. Gaddafi was very similar to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Next, I would also like to say the bad things Gaddafi did while president. He built schools, hospitals and invested money into curing diseases. He tried to make Africa a more developed continent. As you can see Gaddafi did good and bad things while president of Libya.
Death and Defeat: The people started a slow rebelion against the dictator. He was eventully captured by National Transitional Council forces. On October 20th 2011 was killed in his hometown Sirte by rebel fighters beeting him to death. His body was publically displayed so that the people "knew he was dead". Later, his body was buried in a secret location in the desert
